Former Warriors center Andrew Bogut goes on long rant against Australia’s COVID-19 lockdowns

Former Golden State Warriors center Andrew Bogut — an Australian national — posted an 11-minute video to his Instagram page in which he blasted his country’s COVID-19 lockdowns and alleged (without any hard evidence) that the Australian government is paying celebrities to tell people to stay home.a hand holding a football ball: In this June 7, 2019, file photo, Golden State Warriors center Andrew Bogut holds the ball against the Toronto Raptors during the second half of Game 4 of basketball's NBA Finals in Oakland, Calif. © Ben Margot / Associated Press

Australia is enforcing a controversial new lockdown in response to the delta variant, and the lockdown has spawned mass protests in which hundreds have been arrested. The country has pursued a “zero COVID” strategy that officials are now reconsidering. Prime Minister Scott Morrison said lockdowns will be lifted once 70-80% of the population over the age of 16 is fully vaccinated, but the country’s vaccination pace has been slow, as just 30% of those 16 are older are fully inoculated (you can read more on Australia’s vaccine rollout woes here).

Amid the protests, Bogut posted a video to Instagram decrying lockdowns as measures that disproportionately impact the working class, before alleging a conspiracy.

“Last year, about three or four months into this pandemic, I got a message from somebody — I’m not going to name who it was or where it came from — I got offered money to put out a public service announcement for you everyday plebs to stay home,” Bogut said. “It would read something like, ‘Hi I’m Andrew Bogut, former NBA washed-up athlete, former Olympian, whatever you want to call it, it’s your duty to stay home, do the right thing for the community.’

“I’ve got money in my bank account, I’m good, I’m fine. I can fill up my fridge with food, I’ve got cars, I can even somewhat get to different parts of the world if I really wanted to, but you, ‘Stay home, do the right thing for the community, we are all in this together.’ I refuse to do that s—. And I was offered money for it, I don’t need the money, you’re right, I was offered money for it. I refused to do that s—.”

Bogut went on to allege that celebrities who are promoting lockdowns are being paid and others who want to speak out are being “muzzled,” but did not provide any specific examples.

The former Warrior has a history of indulging conspiracy theories. In December 2016, Bogut expressed support for the “Pizzagate” conspiracy theory that Hillary Clinton was running a child sex-trafficking ring out of a Washington D.C. pizza parlor.

As for how his country should be handling the pandemic, the center stated, “So we should let it rip? No we shouldn’t let it rip, but we also shouldn’t be locking down the way we are, I think there’s a middle ground.
