It was originally built to transport crude oil originating from Iran inside Israel and to Europe1. The EastMed Gas pipeline is a 1,180-mile undersea pipeline project from Israel to southern Europe, set to be completed by 2025, which, when completed will ease Europe’s dependence on Russia and Turkey2. The EastMed pipeline is meant to transfer natural gas from Israeli waters to Europe via Greece and Cyprus, but no financing has been secured for it3. Turkey, which was excluded from the project, had staked its own claims to offshore gas reserves, raising regional tensions4.
