Daniel J. Evans and William H. Gates Sr. were lifelong friends and bridge partners, with their families closely intertwined during the early years of Bill Gates’ career. Evans, a former Washington Governor and U.S. Senator, served as a mentor and political conduit for the Gates family, securing Bill Gates a job as a legislative page at the state Capitol when Gates was 15.
