To All Activists: Job Protection

alliance for american manufacturing
Hi again,

I wrote to you back in June about how surging steel and aluminum imports threaten our national security.

Unfortunately, this crisis isn’t resolved. In fact, it might be getting worse.

Please join me in telling President Trump to act immediately to safeguard American steel and aluminum from foreign threats.

The Trump administration promised to unveil the findings of a national security investigation into unfairly traded imports by July 1, but it has yet to do so.

Meanwhile, importers have been dumping their product into the U.S. market at record rates — steel imports alone are up more than 21 percent in 2017 compared to last year.

Steel and aluminum are vital for America’s national defense and critical infrastructure. We need them to build everything from our battleships and bridges to our fighter jets and the electric grid.

But the continued flood of unfairly traded imports from countries like China and Russia has led to dozens of plant closures and tens of thousands of layoffs — and now these American industries are in danger of being lost for good.

Foreign-made products are heavily subsidized and even state-owned by China and Russia. American companies, which operate in a free marketplace, cannot compete against foreign governments’ market manipulation. Our vital steel and aluminum industries need our government to level the playing field.

This isn’t a partisan issue. It’s about protecting our national security and standing up for American workers and companies.

If we don’t step up now, we could find ourselves dependent on China or Russia for the steel and aluminum critical for national defense.

You and I can’t let that happen. Please tell the Trump administration to move forward with its investigation and take swift action to resolve this crisis.

Thank you,

Brigadier General John Adams
U.S. Army (Ret.)
