For your raised-Catholic Editor here, this recent event at Newark’s Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart comes as especially bitter news on a personal level. Located not far from my home, I have visited this stunning European-style Cathedral four or five times over the past decade — by myself, “off hours” and with hardly anyone else present in the massive Church (I’m just not a group-worship type of guy.) These type of solitary visits truly bring one closer to the Spirit of the Great Eternal, as well as bringing back some nostalgic memories of my childhood Catholic schooling/upbringing.
You see, boys and girls, back in the day, most of the Priests and Brothers were real men — tough guys who were dedicated to both the moral and intellectual instruction of their people. And more than a few of them went upside mischievous Mikey King’s head with a well-deserved smack. No sir, they were not at all like the half-sissies and closet queers so common today. And the nuns were no joke either. God bless them all!

The welcoming of a group of openly gay people to Mass by a leader of Cardinal Tobin’s standing in the Roman Catholic Church in this country would have been unthinkable even five years ago. Who could possibly have foreseen that such a venerated and strong institution as the Catholic Church, could have collapsed in what is, relative to history, such a short period of time?
