Our Power Is the Future

March 9 (EIRNS)—It is reported from Hampton Roads, Virginia this week, that a public event held to discuss the book Hidden Figures by Margot Lee Shetterly, on which the highly-acclaimed movie was based, drew a mass audience of 1,000 enthusiastic members of the public—so many that the event had to be moved at the last moment to a larger venue to accommodate the crowd. When Shetterley asked for questions after her speech, 200 hands went up, and at a book-signing event the following morning, hundreds of excited people waited in line to obtain her signature on their copy of the book.

Lawfully, analogous things are happening in other locations. When LaRouche organizers in Manhattan left telephone messages for seven people who had given their contact information at pro-Trump rallies last Saturday, three of the seven returned the calls—an unheard-of ratio!

The attendance and the enthusiasm at the March 7 Frankfurt, Germany businessmen’s meeting addressed by longtime LaRouche associate Harley Schlanger and attended by Helga Zepp-LaRouche, reported on in more detail below, falls into the same pattern.

It’s not that our work has been done for us, because so many people are suddenly more optimistic and enthusiastic. Rather, a natural milieu has been created in which statesman Lyndon LaRouche’s ideas can be more widely discussed, can begin to be understood, and can effectively take hold. This opportunity would never have arisen at all, but for the work of Lyndon and Helga LaRouche, and has only arisen now after a decades-long detour into economic decay and cultural degeneration and bestiality.

The reality is that the crisis—the looming total economic breakdown—never went away. Indeed, it has only come closer. But the illusionists of the British-loving press are pretending that the crisis is actually President Donald Trump, with the alleged threat of dictatorship he poses.

Notwithstanding all of that bluff, the real crisis is rushing forward to meet us just around the next corner, like the fabled “appointment in Samarra.” Only the method of Lyndon LaRouche’s Four Laws can deal with that crisis. That is our saving mission and our power—that of the future.

U.S. ECONOMIC & POLITICAL

LaRouche Associate Addresses High-Level Audience on British Coup against Trump

March 8 (EIRNS)—Longtime LaRouche associate Harley Schlanger yesterday addressed an audience of some 100 businessmen and German reserve officers in Frankfurt on the British-orchestrated coup against President Donald Trump. The event had been organized jointly by the International Division of the Wirtschaftsrat der CDU e.V., (the Economic Council) based in Frankfurt and associated with the Christian Democratic Union, and by the Reservisten Kameradschaft Frankfurt am Main, and titled “Who Is Out To Sabotage the ‘Trump Revolution’?” with Schlanger as the featured speaker. Held at the Villa Bonn, a rather exclusive venue for meetings in Frankfurt, there were about 100 guests, half of whom were in uniform.

In his introduction, Col. Axel Ebbecke (res.), introduced many of the more prominent guests, including “A special guest, Mrs. Helga Zepp-LaRouche, president of the Schiller Institute, whose husband, Mr. Lyndon LaRouche, who is well-known in the United States for his presidential campaigns and the fact that he served as an advisor to the Ronald Reagan Administration on the policy of the Strategic Defense Initiative.” Schlanger was introduced with a brief review of his background, including the fact that he served as Mr. LaRouche’s official spokesman and bureau chief of EIR in the Southwestern U.S.

Schlanger gave a very hard-hitting presentation detailing the British-orchestrated and George Soros-financed coup effort against President Trump, underscoring that these were the same people who launched the Nazi coup against the elected government of the Ukraine in 2014. Trump’s election, he said, is part of a global rejection of the policies of the last 20 years and that Trump is being attacked because he has vowed to reverse the policies of perpetual war and globalization.

Schlanger especially elaborated Trump’s intention to establish a positive relationship with the leaders of both Russia and China to reverse the Obama/British-led drive for World War III. In this context he also developed the cause of the ongoing financial crisis, the need to implement Glass-Steagall and LaRouche’s Four Laws, and the urgency of the U.S. and Europe joining China, Russia, and the BRICS in China’s Belt and Road Initiative.

Throughout the presentation, many of the guests were gesturing or indicating agreement with many points Schlanger made, especially regarding the coup in Ukraine, the futility of sanctions against Russia, etc. Following the presentation, there was a lively question-and-answer period. One TV reporter explained his theory about the terrible German media coverage of Trump. “Do you think the Germans need an image of an evil enemy so they will accept the status quo?” he asked. In responding, Schlanger elaborated on what he had said earlier about the brainwashing of the Germans around “collective guilt.” He spoke of the role of the Bush-Harriman networks in installing the Nazis, and said it is time for Germans to break free of this continuing occupation of their country. Many people approached him afterwards to thank him for saying that, with one commenting that “we, as Germans, are afraid to tell the truth—it is good you did!”

Another guest thanked Schlanger for his presentation, remarking that “you have shown us that you have a deep understanding of American politics. Perhaps you can help us and tell us what is wrong Chancellor Angela Merkel?”

Media Pressure Will Not Prevent Trump from Cooperating with Russia

March 9 (EIRNS)—In an interview with TASS, Deputy Assistant to the U.S. President for National Security Michael Anton, said that while the media pressure does not help in formulating policy toward Russia, it will not prevent President Trump from improving relations with Moscow.

“I don’t see that the window will necessarily be closed. The media pressure certainly does not help the policy formulation process, but it is not going to determine it either,” he said.

TASS asked how long it may take the White House to complete the process of inter-agency coordination of political approaches. Anton replied, “I think months are realistic, weeks are not realistic.”

“He [Trump] very clearly communicated his willingness to explore the possibility of cooperation. And also he noted that he did not know if it will work or not. He said something like ‘I would like to make a deal with Russia. I don’t know if I will get a good deal, but I am going to try,’ ” Anton said.

Roger Stone: Surveillance of Trump ‘An Outrageous Breach of Law and Morality’

March 8 (EIRNS)—In an interview with RT’s Oksana Boyko published today, former Trump advisor Roger Stone charged that the attacks on the U.S. President, and wild, unsubstantiated allegations of Russian interference in last November’s elections, are motivated by one thing: Trump opposes endless war in the Middle East and is open to reaching a peace agreement with Russia on this issue.

“Hillary Clinton had promised the Pentagon and the people in the Central Intelligence Agency the expansion of the proxy war in Syria. They were wringing their hands in glee about war…. That is the real issue here; that is what they resent so deeply…. In this country, if you are not in favor of war with Syria, then you must be a traitor; you must be in the service of Russian intelligence. It’s insulting, it’s outrageous…. This is the worst form of McCarthyism in the 40 years that I have been in American politics.”

Addressing Trump’s charge last weekend that he was under surveillance by the federal government and the intelligence agencies while he was the Republican nominee for President, Stone argued, “this is a scandal bigger than Watergate. This is the most outrageous breach of law and of morality in American public history.” He pointed out that while Obama said he hadn’t approved eavesdropping on Trump, “he didn’t say it didn’t happen; only that he didn’t approve it.” Stone also said that if the Justice Department did ask the Foreign Intelligence Security (FISA) Court for permission to conduct surveillance of Trump twice last year, it’s unlikely they did so without Obama’s permission and knowledge.

So, the question becomes, “What did Obama know and when did he know it?” It could take some time, Stone said, before Obama, his Defense Secretary and former CIA and FBI directors “are dragged before a grand jury and questioned under oath about what they knew.” There is not a shred of evidence provided by the intelligence agencies of Russian meddling in the U.S. elections, Stone asserted. There are only “allegations … projections … and assessments.” Keep in mind, he warned, these are the assessments of the same CIA that lied about torture in the Iraq war; lied about rendition of foreign nationals by the U.S. government in Iraq, and lied about the 9/11/2012 events in Benghazi.

Col. Lawrence Wilkerson Says MI6, GCHQ May Have Wiretapped Trump

March 9 (EIRNS)—In a March 7 edition of the Real News Network’s “Wilkerson Report,” former Secretary of State Colin Powell’s former chief of staff Col. Lawrence Wilkerson (ret.), said that Britain’s MI6 foreign intelligence agency or their GCHQ command center may have been responsible for wiretapping Donald Trump. Interviewed by TRNN’s Paul Jay, who asked “What do you make of Trump’s allegations?” Colonel Wilkerson answered:

“Well, I’m certainly not one, Paul, to defend HMS Trump and that whole entourage of people, but I will paint you a hypothetical here. There are a number of events that have occurred in the last 96 hours or so that lead me to believe that maybe even the Democratic Party—whatever element of it—approached John Brennan at the CIA, maybe even the former president of the United States. And John Brennan, not wanting his fingerprints to be on anything, went to his colleague in London GCHQ, MI6, and essentially said, ‘Give me anything you’ve got.’ And he got something and he turned it over to the DNC or to someone like that. And what he got was GHCQ, MI6’s tapes of conversations of the Trump administration, perhaps even the President himself. It’s really kind of strange, at least to me, they let the head of that organization [GCHQ] go, fired him about the same time this was brewing up. So I’m not one to defend Trump, but in this case he might be right. It’s just that it wasn’t the FBI. [FBI Director James] Comey’s right, he wasn’t wire-tapping anybody, it was John Brennan, at the CIA.”

Former Utah Governor Huntsman Agrees To Become U.S. Ambassador to Russia

March 9 (EIRNS)—President Donald Trump has asked former Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman to become U.S. ambassador to Russia, according to news media. Huntsman “has accepted offer to be U.S. ambassador to Russia,” according to Politico. He is said to have met with U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, and has also contacted aides of U.S. President Donald Trump and may have met with President Trump as well.

Huntsman has served in government in the past, holding the post of U.S. Ambassador to Singapore 1992-1993, Ambassador to China 2009-2011, and the Governor of Utah 2005-2009.

In January 2014, Huntsman was named chairman of the foreign policy think-tank, the Atlantic Council, based in Washington. He was a White House staff assistant for Ronald Reagan, and was appointed Deputy Assistant Secretary of Commerce. Subsequently, under George W. Bush, he served as Deputy U.S. Trade Representative. He launched global trade negotiations in Doha in 2001 and guided the accession of China into the World Trade Organization, according to Wikipedia.

Repeat: President Trump Supports Glass-Steagall

March 9 (EIRNS)—White House spokesman Sean Spicer reiterated earlier today that President Trump supports reinstatement of Glass-Steagall, in answer to a question from John Gizzi of Newsmax.

Famine Threatens 17 Million People Living in the Horn of Africa

March 9 (EIRNS)—The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) has issued an urgent appeal for humanitarian aid to save 17 million people in the Horn of Africa facing a deadly famine. Somalia, along with Djibouti, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, South Sudan, Sudan, and Uganda, are on the brink of imminent famine, and almost half of Somalia’s 6 million people need immediate help, the OIC press statement reported yesterday.

On March 7, “Secretary General of the United Nations António Guterres arrived in Somalia and appealed for $825 million in aid to address drought and cholera in the East Africa nation on the brink of famine,” the New York Times reported. Earlier, Guterres had issued a similar appeal pointing out that famine was underway in part of South Sudan, and warned that people in areas away from the Horn of Africa, such as Nigeria and Yemen, were also at risk of dying from hunger.

Somalia had suffered two consecutive years of drought, and the New York Times reported that meteorologists expect crops to fail again this year. In the 2011 famine, Somalia lost 260,000 people in a period of two months. The OIC pointed out that “more than 110 persons have died in Somalia in the last two days from cholera and famine caused by continuous drought, as announced by Prime Minister Hassan Ali in Mogadishu on March 4,” the OIC release reported.

“It should be noted that Somalia is one of the four countries categorized as being close to facing serious famine, alongside Nigeria, South Sudan, and Yemen, where over 20 million people face horrific conditions, thus requiring urgent action to avoid the spread of famine to wider areas,” said the OIC.

The First Phase of Chabahar Port in Iran Will Be Ready in 2018

March 9 (EIRNS)—Speaking to the state-owned Press Trust of India (PTI), India’s Shipping, Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari reported that “India is keen on expediting development of Chabahar Port in Iran and hopes to complete the first phase of the project next year.” Located in Iran’s Sistan-Balochistan province on the Gulf of Oman, the eastern segment of the Persian Gulf, the port is easily accessible from India’s western coast.

New Delhi has already approved the $150 million needed to complete Phase I. Gadkari said the funds will be released soon and tenders are out for the project. PTI reported, “India’s Kandla Port has floated tenders inviting global bids for supply and commissioning of terminal tractor trailers, forklifts, reach stackers, empty container handlers and yard cranes among other equipment at Shahid Beheshti Port, Chabahar, Iran.”

Completion of the first phase will make operational two berths. In addition to the bilateral pact to develop the Chabahar port, for which India will invest $500 million, a trilateral Agreement on Transport and Transit Corridor has also been signed by India, Afghanistan, and Iran.

“India and Iran signed a memorandum of understanding in May 2016, which lets India equip and operate two berths in Chabahar Port Phase-I on a 10-year lease. After 10 years, the ownership of equipment will be transferred to the Iranian partner,” Sputnik reported. The development of Chabahar Port will cut transportation costs and time between Iran and India’s western coast ports by almost a third. Moreover, the access to Chabahar Port and to Zahedan farther north, will ensure that India will be able to reach four major Afghan cities, Kabul, Kandahar, Herat and Mazar-e-Sharif, through Afghanistan’s Garland Highway.

SCIENCE & INFRASTRUCTURE

Kuwait Is Building Its Silk Road City

March 9 (EIRNS)—Kuwait is engaged in a megaproject in its northeast, in the uninhabited Subiya region. The objective is to revive the ancient Silk Road route and build a Silk City. It will be the Silk Road hub linking the Persian Gulf to Central Asia and Europe.

The project is mammoth, and by far the largest single project in the region. At the heart of the project is construction of a causeway, named the Sheikh Jaber Al Ahmad Causeway Project. It will involve construction of two sea bridges, one linked to Subiya and the other linked to Doha. The first bridge that will be linked to Subiya, considered the main bridge, will stretch 37.5 km, three-quarters of it above water, starting from the Ghazali Street intersection and ending at the Subiya highway. It is already nearly three-quarters completed. The 12.4 km long second bridge, which will link Doha, will pass through the Kuwait Bay area towards the west, Kuwait UpToDate reported. The Lake Pontchartrain Causeway in southern Louisiana in the United States is the world’s longest bridge over water, stretching 38.44 km.

“The Subiya bridge sits on more than 1,500 piles with a diameter of up to 3 meters each, some of which have been driven as deep as 72 meters into the loose clay seabed,” project engineer Mai al-Messad told AFP. Once completed, the driving time between Kuwait City and Subiya will be reduced from 90 minutes to 20-25 minutes. “We have already completed 73% of the project and hope to finish it ahead of the contractual period,” Messad said. “Investment in the Silk City project is expected to top $100 billion, and a 5,000 MW power plant has already been built in Subiya,” AFP reported.

Germany To Assist in Building the Egyptian Aerospace Agency

March 9 (EIRNS)—Egyptian Ambassador to Germany Dr. Badr Abdelatty visited the Berlin office of the German space agency DLR on March 7, receiving briefings from top agency officials on its widespread research activities. Abdelatty, for his part, gave a briefing on the Egyptian plans in space, and both sides discussed an intensification of contacts between Germany and Egypt, with German assistance in Egypt’s setting up a national aerospace research facility.

A high point of the event was a tour for the Egyptian delegation, of the DLR’s Berlin space simulation facility for a wide range of tests under space conditions. After the tour, Prof. Tilman Spohn of the DLR gave the Egyptians an insight into the ongoing and planned missions into the Solar System at large, including the “Insight” Mars mission in 2018, which is to conduct research on geophysical characteristics of Mars. The mission, to be carried out in cooperation between the ESA and NASA, is to start in May 2018 and arrive at the planet a half-year later.

Giving Physics Lectures from Space

March 9 (EIRNS)—Lisa Maria Haas is one of six candidates for the Bremen-based “Astronaut” program which will select two candidates for “first female astronaut of Germany,” reported the Schwäbische Tagblatt news daily, whose editorial policy supports this contest as important in motivating girls and young women in natural sciences and for a job in space technology.

Haas, a physicist, is also committed to giving physics lectures from space to spark curiosity among young people, if she succeeds in being selected for a mission into orbit. The role model for her is Wang Yiping, the Chinese female taikonaut who three years ago gave such a lecture from the Chinese space station—the amazing lecture watched live by 60 million Chinese youth!
