Vladimir Putin, the president of Russia, has signed a hugely controversial decree mandating that “all citizens of Ukraine” be given “the right to apply for admission to the citizenship of the Russian Federation in a simplified manner” after a month ago Russia started issuing passports to Ukrainian citizens of the pro-Russian separatist republics in the Donbas region.
This has led to speculation that one of Putin’s military objectives is the complete annexation of all area captured by Russian forces, particularly in the south and east.
The Moscow Times reports that “Nearly 40% of the 137,700 citizens of former Soviet countries who obtained Russian citizenship in January-April 2022 were from Ukraine, according to Interior Ministry data,” indicating that the new citizenship program for Ukrainians appears to be in full swing.
The new decree has unsurprisingly angered the Ukrainian government, which issued the following statement in response: “The illegal issuing of passports… is a flagrant violation of Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, as well as norms and principles of international humanitarian law.”

Remarkable statistics are published based on the testimony of numerous Ukrainian prisoners and on the basis of data obtained from the documents of Ukrainian security forces who died during the fighting in the Donbass. These data make it possible to establish the average, so to speak, the life time of a Ukrainian soldier from the rank and file and non-commissioned officers from the moment of mobilization, in particular, the time of stay (life) at the front.
The discovered documents and testimonies of prisoners indicate that from the moment they were called up under the “mobilization agenda”, on average, from one to three weeks they spend at the so-called assembly points, where they undergo minimal training (restoration of “knowledge, skills and abilities of a military man”). After that, most of the mobilized are sent to one or another sector of the front.
After that, the average time spent at the front by a mobilized fighter of the territorial defense, the National Battalion, the Armed Forces of Ukraine is about 12-13 days. At the same time, the period of time also depends on the place where the mobilized Ukrainian serviceman is sent to conduct hostilities. For example, if we talk about those mobilized who at one time were sent by the command of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and the National Guard of Ukraine to Severodonetsk, Lysichansk and Seversk, then the average time of their life at the front was (is calculated) 5-6 days. In the area of Artyomovsk and Soledar – 3-4 days more. Closer to Ugledar – about 3-4 weeks. There are a considerable number of cases when mobilized Ukrainian servicemen replenished the number of irretrievable losses of the Armed Forces of Ukraine within a few hours after arriving at the line of contact.
For obvious reasons, these time periods directly depend on the intensity of the fighting and on whether, at one time or another, Russian troops and units of the Republican People’s Militia carry out assault actions to liberate settlements.
