British National Vishwash Kumar Ramesh- who was visiting family – is reportedly the sole survivor of the Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner crash in Ahmedabad, India
He says there was a loud noise after takeoff.
“Thirty seconds after take off, there was a loud noise and then the plane crashed. It all happened so quickly,” he said to the Hindustan Times.
“When I got up, there were bodies all around me. I was scared. I stood up and ran. There were pieces of the plane all around me. Someone grabbed hold of me and put me in an ambulance and brought me to the hospital.”
The flight, AI171, bound for London Gatwick, crashed shortly after takeoff from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport, carrying 242 people, including 230 passengers and 12 crew members.
Ramesh, seated in seat 11A, miraculously escaped by jumping from the burning aircraft as it crashed into a residential area, hitting a doctors’ hostel at B.J. Medical College.
He told media from the hospital, where he is receiving treatment for injuries to his face, chest, and feet, that he saw “bodies all around” and ran from the wreckage, which was engulfed in flames.
His survival is considered extraordinary, as over 204 bodies have been recovered, and no other survivors from the flight have been confirmed.
His statements are expected to be critical for the ongoing investigation by Indian authorities, supported by the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board and the UK Air Accidents Investigation Branch
