A Texas man has been charged with making death threats towards House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and other Democrats after ranting on social media about the delayed congressional response to the coronavirus outbreak, according to federal prosecutors.
27-year-old Gavin Weslee Blake Perry, of Wichita Falls, Texas, claimed that Pelosi was part of a satanic cult and that she should be killed along with other Democrats working with her, police said.
“If you’re a dem or a part of the establishment in the democrats’ side I view you as a criminal and a terrorist and I advise everyone to Go SOS and use live rounds,” Perry wrote on his Facebook Monday, per prosecutors.
“SOS” is an abbreviation for “shoot on sight,” the New York Times reports.
Perry’s post also included a screenshot of two tweets by New York Senator Chuck Schumer, one of which was critical of President Trump’s response to the coronavirus epidemic.
The second tweet was written by an impostor criticizing the president for imposing a travel ban on China.
“Shoot to kill,” Perry wrote, per prosecutors. “This is a revolution.”
Now, Perry faces up to five years in prison as he is charged with transmitting a threatening communication in interstate commerce.
According to court records, he was arrested on Wednesday, March 25 and is remanded in custody. He made an initial appearance in the United States District Court in Northern Texas on Thursday via video link but did not have a lawyer to speak on his behalf as of Thursday (March 26) night.
Perry’s rants came after Congress and the Trump administration hit a deadlock while negotiating a $2 trillion stimulus package to reduce the economic impact of the coronavirus pandemic. The package was approved by the Senate on Wednesday and has now advanced to the House of Representatives.
According to the report, Perry told officers who apprehended him that they were violating his First Amendment rights and that their actions were punishable by death.
“The Department of Justice takes the security of our public servants seriously,” Erin Nealy Cox, the United States attorney for Northern Texas, said in a statement. “Americans are entitled to voice their opinions — but we will not allow them to threaten our officials’ physical safety.”

Perry’s threats against the speaker were posted under an anti-abortion article shared by him on Facebook.
“Nancy Pelosi is a part of a satanic cult and so are the people who work closely with her,” Perry wrote, according to prosecutors. “Dems of the establishment will be removed at any cost necessary and yes that means by death.”

Earlier this month, a Connecticut man reportedly threatened to kill Democrat Rep Adam Schiff of California, after he was appointed as the lead impeachment manager in the House. He was arrested soon after.
That said, a number of Democrat leaders have faced similar death threats for acting against the Trump administration.
Local law enforcement was tipped off about Perry’s posts by a concerned citizen, they said.
Meanwhile, Matthew J DeSarno, the FBI special agent in charge in Dallas, asserted that “the defendant threatened the life of an elected official and that will not be tolerated.”
