A Simple Elderberry Syrup Recipe For Cold And Flu Season From Nick Polizzi

As the weather starts getting colder up here in the northern hemisphere, our little family has a number of fun herbal preparations that we love to make together.

One of our favorite go-to remedies (that we use all fall and winter long) is elderberry syrup. 

The berries of the elderberry tree are packed with vitamins and anti-oxidants that are proven to boost your immune system. They’re also a great source of quercetin, a strong anti-inflammatory that is shown to help prevent respiratory infections. Long story short, elderberry is definitely a player you want on your immunity team! 

As usual, our ancestors were in on the secret. In fact, people have been preparing this concoction for thousands of years for two main reasons: it’s delicious and it works! 

Below I’ve shared the Polizzi family recipe for elderberry syrup. Enjoy! 

Ingredients

• 1 cup dried elderberries (or 2 cups of fresh berries, if you can find them) 
• 4 cups water
• ½ cup honey

Preparation

Step 1: Using a sauce pan or small pot, add the elderberries (dried or fresh) to 4 cups of water and simmer for one hour.

Step 2: Strain the berries and place them in the compost.

Step 3: Put the remaining elderberry juice back in the pot, bringing it to a simmer. 

Step 4: Add ½ cup honey, making sure it completely melts and infuses creating the perfect elderberry syrup.

Step 5: Bottle and store in the refrigerator for up to 4 weeks. (Honey acts as a preservative – but since this recipe has half the typical honey added to a medicinal syrup, make sure to refrigerate.)
