‘The Death-Agony of Olympus’

Dec. 5 (EIRNS)—When was there ever such corruption of the U.S. elite—from academia to the “news-and-entertainment” media, government bureaucracies and the Congress—all of it together one pulsating mass of filth, like a fistful of live worms from a bait-basket—as what is now exposed daily in the impeachment charade?

Yet Lyndon LaRouche forecast it all quite accurately just 21 years ago in his work “The Death-Agony of Olympus.”  He was diagnosing problems in the administration of Bill Clinton under totally different circumstances, but what he found is provably what we face today, to be overcome by the same means as those he set forth. (See Lyndon H. LaRouche, Jr., “The Death-Agony of Olympus,” EIR, Vol. 25, #37, Sept. 18 1998.)

LaRouche began his diagnosis with the “Third Way,” which he treated as a convergence of then-British Prime Minister Tony Blair’s “New Labour” with the 1968 “New Left” of the Weathermen, the “lost cause” of the neo-Confederate “New Agrarians,” and Newt Gingrich’s Republicans.

He said the root of the problem lay in this doomed elite’s unshakable support for “globalization” and “free trade,” totally oblivious to any contrary reality.  “Globalization” and “free trade,” wrote LaRouche, are the hallmarks of a society which has lost the moral fitness to survive. It is no coincidence that the two pillars of Donald Trump’s 2016 campaign were opposition to “globalization” and “free trade.”

No trick can save a nation (or a caste, we add) which has lost the moral fitness to survive, LaRouche said, appropriately citing Mencius, the great Classical Chinese thinker who was a contemporary of Plato.

LaRouche sent his readers to the school of Classical tragedy, to learn to recognize the fatal passion leading them on, to fight its false emotion, and thus to avoid inevitable doom. He wrote that what we are witnessing is the last act of the lost third play in Aeschylus’ Prometheus tragedy, poetically recaptured two millennia later by Shelley. It is the death-agony of tyrant Zeus’ Olympus—of the Zeus otherwise known as Satan.

“Instead of the real, mass-based political parties of the pre-1971-1976 interval, U.S. political parties have degenerated into parodies of kept women. They have been transformed, step by step, from instruments of political representation, into echoes of the worst sort of political party formations known from the history of Europe since ancient Rome’s politics of bread and circuses. Typified by the corrupting influence of the National Endowment for Democracy (NED,) they have degenerated into mere political fronts for the oligarchy-controlled institutions of governmental bureaucracies.

“This political change is typified by the symbiosis of Wall Street ‘chaos theory’ junkies with Wall Street hegemony over the financing and mass media propaganda-support needed to conduct successful election-campaigns, both combined with the permanent bureaucracy of the U.S. Department of Justice, all combined with the Federal Reserve System, and all combined with the leading globalized, and chiefly morally debased ‘mass news and entertainment media’ of the U.S. and other nations. This is a combination which has largely displaced the former function of mass-constituency-based politics from the national political life of the U.S.A., and of relevant other nations. This kind of miscreant has emerged as most typical of the presently ruling political class.”

After Wednesday’s Dec. 4 impeachment testimony by three corrupt professors, it might seem that LaRouche omitted the universities from this combination of degeneracy, but he brings them in later:

“After we have considered what modern European civilization had accomplished earlier, until the recent decades’ accelerating decay of our culture, we must face the fact, that what has come to pass, recently, respecting the standard for defining ‘educated persons,’ today, is worse than a great disappointment; it is, substantially, a terrible fraud. During all of this present century, to date, the most conspicuous expression of this decadence among so-called ‘educated persons,’ has been an accelerating rate of moral and intellectual degeneration in such departments of university and secondary education as literature, music, plastic art-forms, and the so-called ‘social sciences.’…

“During the latter time, each new generation’s elites, in particular, have been, on the average, less intelligent, less literate, less rational, less sane, than those of the predecessor generations. This judgment is not a mere matter of cultural ‘preferences,’ of mere personal ‘opinion;’ the possibility of the survival of civilization depends upon recognizing the clear evidence of that decadence, and reversing this decay in very specific respects. That crucial task is our subject here.”

Our elites have failed; they are self-doomed.  As Doug Wead’s new book, Inside Trump’s White House: The Real Story of His Presidency, documents, Trump’s Presidential campaign was essentially the campaign of the Trump family. His government is forced to be largely a government of the Trump family, because most others will betray him and the country.

What must we do?  We must recruit, train and educate a new elite from among America’s organic leaders. Refugees from the sinking ship will join us as well. Lyndon LaRouche’s spirit, acting through you, must now become in this respect the Benjamin Franklin of the 21st century.

U.S. POLITICAL AND ECONOMIC

Pelosi Announces House Moving Ahead with Impeachment Articles against President Trump

Dec. 5 (EIRNS)—Following a wild, yet, at the same time ultimately boring television show hearing Dec. 4, involving three unhinged Democratic constitutional law professors, who are all members of RESIST, and one calm Democratic constitutional law expert, Jonathan Turley, Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, appeared today at 9 a.m., in the white pants suit protest colors first donned for the President’s January 2019 State of the Union, and announced that there was no choice but to proceed with impeachment, according to the teleprompter from which she read.

She first referred, ominously, to the Declaration of Independence, a fact noteworthy for those who were actually listening to the seditious claptrap she was peddling. She attacked the Article II powers of the President, without any reference to the fact that the founders, having suffered under the weak executive of the Articles of Confederation, actually made the President more powerful than a king. She then talked about Donald Trump undermining the national security policy of the United States without any reference to the fact that, constitutionally, the President sets that policy. When asked later in the day whether she hates Donald Trump, she lied, waved her arms wildly, and declared herself a Catholic who hates no one, while, at the same time declaring the President a coward.

Yesterday’s law professor show was even more horrifying to anyone who knows anything about the law or the Constitution. Similarly horrifying was the mental map of the Democrats at the hearing—they were delusional, irrational, and incapable of responding realistically to reality. To the average person, however, the whole event would simply appear bizarre, completely disconnected from any reality they might know, the type of weird ivory tower escapade their sons and daughters tell them about if they made the mistake to send them to the modern American academy.

The three professors opined endlessly about the legal basis for impeachment when the actual articles the House is now promising to draft had not yet even been written. Led by Stanford’s Pamela Karlan, it was a circus act for their RESIST audience, advocating an argument about the Constitution’s impeachment clause which would not be recognized by the founders. In brief, it allows for impeachment based on any subjectively perceived abuse of presidential powers rather than the specific and objective high crimes and misdemeanors set forth in the Constitution.

Karlan, who refers to herself as “a snarky, bisexual, Jewish woman” has publicly and proudly said she was triggered by even walking by the Trump Hotel in Washington and crossed the street to avoid it. Another gem concerns her claim that liberals tend to want live in close proximity to one another because of their superior social skills and that conservatives have to spread out across the country to avoid conflict. Presumably this is her explanation of the electoral college win by Trump. Doing her best to imitate the Red Queen in Alice in Wonderland, Karlan seemed to be yelling most of the time. She even went so far as to make a crude joke about the President’s 13 year-old-son, Barron, prompting a direct and angry response from First Lady Melania Trump.

Karlan opined on everything, including foreign policy, saying, “This is not just about our national interests to protect elections or make sure Ukraine stays strong and fights the Russians so we don’t have to fight them here, but it’s in our national interest to promote democracy worldwide.” There it was, again, the delusion and big lie that there is an active war between Ukraine and Russia peddled endlessly by our political establishment in order to provoke that very war.

Professors Noah Feldman and Michael Gerhardt provided emotional support to Karlan’s rants about the founders and how genocide and foreign wars are in our national interest. Otherwise, they had long ago expressed their support for impeaching the President on any ground which might be found, well before the current phase of the coup.

In contrast, Jonathan Turley provided a 51-page discourse on the Constitution to the panel and told them that impeachment of an American President cannot be based on rage, that the record for impeachment was flimsy and did not set forth a crime by the President, and called the Democrats’ constant claim that resort to the courts by subpoenaed witnesses constituted obstruction of justice, an actual abuse of power by Congress. Turley made a passionate appeal to his former Democratic allies, citing the words of Thomas More about the consequences when the law is abandoned for exigent and irrational passion. LaRouche PAC will be producing a new video on this hearing, highlighting Turley’s remarks on the Constitution along with some profound video clips from Lyndon LaRouche concerning the Constitution’s governing natural law Preamble.

There is presently no known schedule for further impeachment proceedings in the House. There are splits concerning what articles will actually be drafted. And, there is presently no schedule for a vote other than the statement that it will occur before Christmas.

Schiff’s Releasing Phone Records of Giuliani, Nunes, and Solomon, Appropriately Provokes Outrage

Dec. 5 (EIRNS)—Continuing his audition to replace Robert Mueller as the grim Grand Inquisitor, shredding every legal norm, House Intelligence Chairman Adam Schiff released the phone records of Rudolph Giuliani, Devin Nunes, and John Solomon in an appendix to his final report on the Star Chamber House basement impeachment proceedings. Giuliani remains the President’s personal lawyer, Solomon is an award-winning journalist, House Intelligence ranking member Nunes has played a supremely significant role in uncovering the coup against Donald Trump, on behalf of the American people.

The subpoena itself, to AT&T, which seems to have asked for the phone recordsof Giuliani and Lev Parnas, the former Giuliani translator, now desperately attempting to concoct stories about the President and Giuliani in return for a plea agreement from the federal government. The subpoena should have triggered Sixth Amendment attorney-client privilege concerns requiring court review, but AT&T simply caved and turned over the records. This has provoked outrage in Republican and libertarian circles and resulted in an editorial condemning Schiff in today’s Wall Street Journal. Schiff made no effort to redact any of the metadata he released concerning Nunes and Solomon in the AT&T records he published.

Giuliani in Ukraine

Dec. 5 (EIRNS)—The New York Times reports that Rudolph Giuliani has been in Hungary and in Ukraine meeting with former Ukrainian prosecutors Viktor Shokin, Yuriy Lutsenko, Kostiantyn Kulyk, and Andrey Derkach, the member of Ukraine’s Verkhovna Rada legislature, who has published allegations claiming that Joe Biden personally profited from a huge money-laundering scheme run by associates of former President Viktor Yanukovych through Burisma holdings. The Times reports that Giuliani is working on a documentary for One America News (OAN) aimed at demolishing the current impeachment drive against the President.

Giuliani himself refused to provide a reason for his visit. Giuliani is under an intense and coordinated assault, including a criminal investigation aimed at shutting him up, together with all sources of information to him, as well as journalist John Solomon, and Rep. Devin Nunes (R-CA), as the coup proceeds. The surprise visit produced hysterical coverage from State Department networks in Ukraine, who sought to link the “chaotic” visit with President Volodymyr Zelensky’s scheduled meeting on Monday, Dec. 9 with Vladimir Putin on the sidelines of the Normandy Four summit in Paris.

STRATEGIC WAR DANGER

Iran Threat Gets Hyped Up Again

Dec. 5 (EIRNS)—Just as the NATO summit was concluding, the Wall Street Journal, CNN and other corporate media began engaging in hyping up the threat from Iran. The Journal posted a report late on Dec. 4 claiming that the Trump Administration is considering deploying 14,000 troops to the Middle East aimed at deterring Iran, which would double the number of troops that the administration has deployed so far this year. John Rood, the Undersecretary of Defense for Policy, told the Senate Foreign Relations Committee today, however, that while such a deployment is possible, the Journal report is “erroneous,” and clarifying that “we haven’t made a decision to deploy an additional 14,000 troops.”

The Journal report was preceded by Pentagon leaks, a few hours earlier, of “fresh intelligence” to CNN’s Barbara Starr, on the allegedly growing threat of new attacks by Iran. “There has been consistent intelligence in the last several weeks,” one administration official said. In the last several weeks, the CNN report continued, there has been movement of Iranian forces and weapons that the U.S. worries could be put in place for a potential attack, if one is ordered by the Iranian regime, the officials said.

NATO To Focus More on the China Enemy-Image

Dec. 5 (EIRNS)—Seventy years since its Cold War-era founding as a transatlantic alliance fixated on Moscow, NATO is expanding its gaze towards China which some in the Western alliance claim is posing a strategic challenge to the West, according to a Reutersdispatch yesterday.

In in point 6 of its London Declaration, NATO made a one-sentence reference to China, but whose context cannot be ignored: “To stay secure, we must look to the future together. We are addressing the breadth and scale of new technologies to maintain our technological edge, while preserving our values and norms.  We will continue to increase the resilience of our societies, as well as of our critical infrastructure and our energy security. NATO and Allies, within their respective authority, are committed to ensuring the security of our communications, including 5G, recognizing the need to rely on secure and resilient systems. We have declared space an operational domain for NATO, recognizing its importance in keeping us safe and tackling security challenges, while upholding international law.  We are increasing our tools to respond to cyber attacks, and strengthening our ability to prepare for, deter, and defend against hybrid tactics that seek to undermine our security and societies. We are stepping up NATO’s role in human security.  We recognize that China’s growing influence and international policies present both opportunities and challenges that we need to address together as an Alliance.”

During his press conference, Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg was more explicit, but not overly so: “For the first time, we addressed the rise of China—both the challenges and the opportunities it poses. And the implications for our security. Leaders agreed we need to address this together as an Alliance.  And that we must find ways to encourage China to participate in arms control arrangements.”

U.S. Defense Secretary Mark Esper told Reuters there was an increasing understanding in Europe about the challenges posed by China’s rapidly expanding military might, which includes everything from hypersonic weaponry to aircraft carriers. “China is a challenge for us and we need to get ahead of that,” Reuters quotes Esper as saying. “That doesn’t mean that China right now is an enemy. But we need to help shape that together as an alliance. And we need to be prepared in case things do turn out in a way we prefer they not.”

Stoltenberg remarked ahead of the summit that China was the world’s second-largest defense spender, after the United States. “It’s not about moving NATO into the South China Sea, but it’s about taking into account the fact that China is coming closer to us,” he said, pointing to Chinese activity in the Arctic, Africa and heavy investments in European infrastructure.

COLLAPSING WESTERN FINANCIAL SYSTEM

Former Handelsblatt Editor Exposes EU’s Green Finance Bubble Conspiracy

Dec. 5 (EIRNS)—Gabor Steingart, former editor-in-chief of Germany’s business daily Handesblatt, is the first figure with the “established” media to blow up the EU Green finance conspiracy in Germany, after EIR and Helga Zepp-LaRouche. Steingart is a well-known journalist who founded his own multimedia group and is a frequent talk show guest. His newsletter is circulated for free to 100,000 readers and his podcast has up to 500,000 viewers. His economic views are not Hamiltonian, but his criticism hits the point.

“The ECB in Frankfurt, the [EU] European Investment Bank in Luxembourg, and the EU Commission in Brussels are pursuing together a grand plan, with risks and side effects that no national parliament has been informed of. Europe wants to rescue the world climate—with the money printing press. Whatever it takes,” wrote Steingart, in a guest column today in Focus Online.

“The secret script has already been written. It looks like this:

The EU Parliament establishes the climate emergency, as they did last Thursday [Nov. 28]. Everything should be subordinated to the purpose of ‘limiting global warming to below 1.5° Celsius.’

The new EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen accordingly will put the ecological transition at the center of her inauguration speech. ‘I want the Green Deal to become Europe’s trademark,’ she said. The continent of the industrial revolution is to be de-carbonized in order to achieve ‘climate neutrality.’

The main instrument for the operation is, on one side, the European Investment Bank in Luxembourg, led by German economist Werner Hoyer…. The multilateral bank should draft, implement and finance eco-projects worth €1 trillion by 2030.

The ECB accompanies this, with printing press money. In the context of its already active purchase program, the ECB should now invest in green stocks and bonds. ECB President Christine Lagarde seems not to recognize a border violation: here: ‘Climate change and environment protection should be in the focus of every institution,’ she told the European Parliament….”

“Greta Thunberg’s alarmism and John Maynard Keynes’ interventionism are joining hands,” writes Steingart. A new chapter of European economic history is being opened, with central banks “going from bailing out banks to bailing out the climate.” While Steingart wrongly calls this “French-style planning,” he correctly reminds the German reader that the ECB action is backed by taxpayers’ money, which is what ECB member-states paid as ECB capital. “They back the ECB balance sheet with already about €200 billion. That is the equivalent to the Bundeswehr budget for five years.”

The Parliament deputies know about these plans but are acting “sleepy.” Bundesbank President Jens Weidmann has mumbled something about it, but he is careful not to be too loud.

From the standpoint of the ECB’s own statutes, the climate bailout plan is “a complete violation of European Treaties, which explicitly prohibit state financing through the central bank,” says Prof. Klemens Skibicki of the Cologne Business School.

Banque de France Governor Wants ECB To Move Quickly To Issue Digital Euro

Dec. 5 (EIRNS)—“There would be some advantage in moving rapidly to issue at least a wholesale Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC), as we would be the first such issuer in the world and would thus reap the benefits of having a benchmark CBDC,” Bank of France Governor François Villeroy de Galhau told a finance conference in Paris.

Villeroy de Galhau is a central player in the global “regime change” in monetary affairs advocated by Bank of England Governor Mark Carney, which envisions the creation of a Green bubble inflated with central bank “digital money.”

The French central bank, Villeroy said, is eager to get experiments running that would use a CBDC for exchanging and settling tokenized financial assets between financial companies, according to Reuters, and will launch a call for projects before the end of the first quarter of 2020.

“Our actions will naturally contribute to the work of the Eurosystem (of European central banks), which should make looking into the possibility of an ‘e-euro’ one of its next focuses,” Villeroy said.

SCIENCE AND INFRASTRUCTURE

National Academy of Sciences Recommends New Fusion Research Facilities toward a Pilot Plant

Dec. 5 (EIRNS)—At this year’s Fusion Power Associates annual meeting Dec. 3-4 in Washington, there were no major breakthrough experimental results reported, as some machines are under repair (i.e., Princeton) and some are being or have recently been upgraded (i.e., KSTAR in Korea). But one of the most encouraging developments in the conclusions and recommendations is the recently completed study of fusion by the National Academy of Sciences.

The panel’s report, “Burning Plasma Research,” carried out by the Committee on a Strategic Plan for U.S. Plasma Research, concluded that “now is the time to begin recognizing fusion as an energy source,” rather only as a science program, Michael Mauel, co-chair of the panel told conference attendees. Why now? The report outlines progress in several technical engineering challenges in fusion, such as high-temperature superconducting magnets and new materials, and recommends that the U.S. start a program toward building a compact reactor (meaning smaller than ITER) that is “economical.” To do this, the report states, requires “building new facilities,” which has not been done for decades.

The study had been ordered by and was supported by the Department of Energy, but Academy reports are also taken most seriously on Capitol Hill. This study recommends that the annual fusion budget be raised by $200 million for each of the next 10 years to carry out this acceleration of a fusion energy program. If both the Executive and Legislative branches of government in Washington get behind the recommendations, we could finally see at least the beginning of positive motion.

For the second year in a row, the director of China’s Institute of Nuclear Energy Safety Technology of Chinese Academy of Sciences (INEST), which carries out extensive work in fusion, was denied a visa. The scientist from INEST who gave the presentation, Zhibin Chen, briefly discussed the cooperation program INEST has with Russia. Called the “Alliance” program, its focus is to verify and validate components. He said that INEST is very interested in cooperation, and anyone likewise interested should email him.

INEST conducts extensive research in fission technology. Chen said that although after nuclear accidents, support for nuclear technology in advanced countries dropped, in the developing countries it was less so. These countries are not interested in building small reactors, he said, because they need the power. “Look at China and India,” he suggested.

Dr. Chen said that fission is the competition for fusion, so they want to accelerate the development of fusion.

Italian Scientist Ridicules COP25 Fraud

Dec. 5 (EIRNS)—Franco Battaglia, professor of physical chemistry, signer of the Italian scientists’ petition on climate, and regular columnist for Il Giornale, ridiculed the COP25 conference and its agenda in an article published Dec. 4.

“COP25 should have taken place in Chile. But down there, they had decided to run the subway system with solar energy alone. They failed, but the mere attempt has increased transportation costs so much that Chileans got angry. Really angry. And the event was moved to Madrid,” Battaglia wrote.

COP25 will fail like all other COPs, and this is because it challenges simple arithmetic.

In fact, presuming that one used the most efficient technology to reduce CO2 emission—nuclear energy—to replace the entire current global electricity production, global emissions would be reduced by 30% (the electricity rate to global emissions) at a cost of $6 trillion. If one spends the $6 trillions for solar panels, the result is 1%.

Green insanity can be seen in the case of Italy, which “spent €100 billion just to build photovoltaic plants that produce 2 GW electricity which could have been produced with two nuclear plants for less than €10 billions.”

Fernández de Kirchner Makes Scathing Attack on ‘Lawfare’ Political Abuse of Justice System

Dec. 5 (EIRNS)—Speaking Dec. 2 before a three-judge panel in Buenos Aires, convened to question her in one of seven cases in which she was indicted for corruption, former Argentine President and now Vice President-elect Cristina Fernández de Kirchner instead delivered a scathing three-and-a-half hour denunciation of the doctrine of “lawfare” which persecuted her, her allies and children, at the behest of neo-liberal President Mauricio Macri. The three judges, whom she charged were complicit in the judicial witch hunt against her, were left speechless. She refused to answer the 150 questions they had prepared, telling them instead that they were the ones who had to answer questions. “History will absolve me,” she said, “but not you.”

Lyndon LaRouche and his associates were victims of this same “lawfare,”—judicial and financial warfare—as was Brazil’s former President Lula da Silva through the U.S. Justice Department’s “Lava Jato” (Operation Carwash) dragnet, and former Ecuadorean President Rafael Correa through similar means. The same DOJ and State Department networks running “Lava Jato” also helped direct the vendetta against Fernández.

Fernández de Kirchner specified that Macri, along with a complicit media, used the justice system to demonize her and her allies as thieves who had robbed Argentina. She noted with irony that it’s a wonder she had time to govern as President, since she was supposedly involved in four cases of “illicit association”—the term they come up with when they can’t pin you with any other crime, she said.

Fernández de Kirchner methodically tore apart all the cases against her, for which no evidence other than that provided by government-paid “whistleblowers” was ever provided. Government agencies and judges engaged in illegal wiretaps and espionage to manufacture “proof” against her, she charged, which was then leaked to the corrupt media which blared sensationalist headlines nationwide. Why, she asked, didn’t they investigate Macri’s removal of the head of the government’s Financial Investigative Unit (UIF) in charge of investigating financial crimes, and naming as his replacement a former employee of the IMF and of the Queen’s drug bank, HSBC, a bank “which has been prosecuted internationally for money laundering,” she pointed out.

And, what was behind her persecution, Fernández de Kirchner asked? “They had to condemn a government, Nestor Kirchner’s [her predecessor as President and late husband]. They had to bring back the IMF. And for that they had to convince [people] that the person who liberated us from the IMF, was a scoundrel. And that’s why I’m sitting here today.”
