- “International Call to Youth: The Age of Reason Is in the Stars!’
Sept. 3 (EIRNS)—This headline, “The Age of Reason Is in the Stars!” is the title of a statement released this week, subtitled, “International Call to Youth,” by Helga Zepp-LaRouche, Founder and President of the Schiller Institute. It is intended for wide circulation as colleges open, and especially targetted for simultaneous campus distribution next week in days of action planned in multiple locations throughout the Americas, Europe, Africa and Asia, on Sept. 10 and 12. The full text is provided below. The statement makes clear that today’s climate change madness is completely contrary to the true identity of man as a spacefaring species, which can, withspace age technology, both attack any problem at all, and make new discoveries about the vast universe.
In addressing youth this way, the statement at the same time speaks to people of all ages, to understand our real nature as creative human beings, who can solve problems and build a future. The world need not come to an end as the green hysteria campaign would have you accept, through brainwashing and demoralization. Behind this Chicken Little “the sky is falling” campaign are the billionaire elitists and royalists associated with the City of London/Wall Street crowd whose own casino system itself is blowing out.
The challenges right now are acute, of course. September is ushering in new aspects of the crack-up of the monetarist financial system, e.g., the Argentina debt and currency instability needs emergency economic attention, within action for a new world credit system. Likewise, in the United States, industrial factory activity is declining, as indicated, for example, in five straight months of decline in the Index of Purchasing Managers. Given that the bubble of risky U.S. corporate debt now stands at record levels, this is a crash waiting to happen. On top of it all, comes the tariffs face-off between the United States and China.
Finally, add in the green hysterics planned later this month in New York City, at the Sept. 20 Climate Strike start-up, and the Sept. 23 UN Climate Summit.
Instead of following along these hopeless pathways to collapse and doom, we have the principles and policies that can deal with the mess, as laid out by Lyndon LaRouche. Nations must have sound banking, through Glass-Steagall type regulations, so that plentiful credit can be directed to priority activities, especially front-end scientific and technological projects for space exploration and for fusion energy that uplift the productivity and livelihood for all.
This new “Age of Reason Is in the Stars!” campaign is initiated to recruit people to a scientific perspective to carry through such ideas, a most important part of which, as described yesterday by Zepp-LaRouche, is to “get a higher level of reason of cooperation among the most important four nations [United States, China, Russia, and India], but not being exclusive, and other countries should join with them; and that we need to establish a completely New Paradigm of international relations and cooperation on a higher level concerning the common aims of mankind, if mankind is supposed to get out of this crisis.”
COLLAPSING WESTERN FINANCIAL SYSTEM
Sept. 3 (EIRNS)—Following yesterday’s implementation of exchange controls announced on Sept. 1, the Argentine currency strengthened slightly, trading at 58 to the dollar rather than the 62 of Aug. 30. But little is settled. Today, the local Merval stock index was down 11.5%, while Argentine stocks and bonds on Wall Street plummeted by 8.9%.
Uncertainty reigns. President Mauricio Macri hasn’t said a word in public since the Sept. 1 announcement of currency controls, leaving his Finance Minister Hernan Lacunza and Central Bank head Guido Sandleris to explain everything. Macri cancelled his appearance at the annual Industry Day celebration yesterday, sending his Production Minister Dante Sica instead to face businessmen, irate over the economic debacle that IMF policies have wrought.
Bloomberg writes today that if Argentine bonds continue to depreciate—currently they are trading at between 38-40 cents on the dollar—vulture funds will soon be swooping in, as “Argentina is again looking like a ripe target for funds that specialize in wringing value out of distressed assets.”
According to Página 12, a brawl occurred at the Aug. 30 “informal” IMF Board meeting, to discuss the Argentine situation. Sweden, Holland and Italy opposed disbursing the next $5.4 billion IMF tranche to Argentina, on grounds that Macri hasn’t complied with the terms of the $57 billion standby agreement. They recommend waiting until a new government takes power to see where the chips fall. The U.S. supports disbursing the funds. Reportedly, several of the IMF board members were critical of the “flexibility” with which the Fund dealt with Argentina, which stands in contrast to its much harsher treatment of other countries. Whether the $5.4 billion will be disbursed is still up in the air, however.
U.S. POLITICAL AND ECONOMIC
Sept. 3 (EIRNS)—U.S. factory activity was down in August, for the fifth straight month, as measured by the Purchasing Managers Index kept by the Institute for Supply Management. The index level for August was 49.1, when the level of 50 is considered baseline for stable activity, and anything below that indicates contraction. This August level is the lowest in three years—since January, 2016. The index level has gone down for five consecutive months, starting at 55.3 in March, and now finally falling below 50 for August. The index is designed to reflect the trend in volume of factory orders, production and hiring.
Sept. 3 (EIRNS)—President Donald Trump last night tweeted the announcement that Brazil will allow a larger volume of tariff-free imports of U.S. ethanol. The deal is to last a year. Adding this to a prior administration announcement that the U.S. will now permit E15—a blend of 15% ethanol into gasoline—all year round, instead of being banned in the summer when it contributes to smog, Trump hailed these ethanol measures as helping farmers. He tweeted last night, “Making great progress for our Farmers. Approved E-15, year round. Big additional list to be submitted & approved within two weeks. Will be even better for Ethanol, and we save our small refineries!” (The administration is granting a waiver to small refineries, to not have to blend in 15% of ethanol, which is infuriating farmers.)
It’s nice the President wants to help farmers, but the deals stink. Even Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue, who went to a high-profile Illinois farm meeting Aug. 28 to plug the administration’s pro-ethanol work, couldn’t make it click.
First, the “markets” logic that these measures of more ethanol use—exports to Brazil and summer blending—will increase demand for corn, which will support corn prices to the farmer, is hogwash. Given the volume of commodity speculation and other factors, despite the fact that 40% of the U.S. corn crop goes for biofuels, thanks to the administrations of George H.W. Bush, Obama and now Trump—corn prices to farmers are still way below parity price.
Secondly, guess who benefits by having the two biggest producers of ethanol—Brazilian sugar cane and the U.S. corn, which account for 90% of the world output of ethanol—import and export more to each other? It’s insane. Only the commodities traders and gas companies “win.” Thefarmers and eaters lose.
Most of all, the huge amount of farm capacity going to waste producing biofuels in both countries should have been stopped long ago. It should be phased out as soon as possible, and talks started for complementary production and trade arrangements in a new world of international cooperation for food, industry, and power, inspired by collaboration in space. We can do this.
Sept. 3 (EIRNS)—Rep. Devin Nunes (R-CA), now Ranking Member of the House Intelligence Committee, declared that former FBI Director James Comey may still be charged, in a Breitbart News interview Sunday Sept. 1.
Although Justice Department did not indict Comey last week based on DOJ Inspector General Michael Horowitz’s harsh report, Nunes said Sunday that if former Connecticut U.S. Attorney John Durham, who has charge of investigating the origins of the DOJ’s Russiagate investigation against the President, follows the criminal referral made by House Intelligence Committee Republicans, along the lines of a criminal conspiracy, Comey “could face charges in that lane.” Nunes elaborated that thanks to the Inspector General’s findings, Comey is “eligible for a larger conspiracy charge,” adding “We need real charges brought.” Nunes said the place to watch for such potential charges against Comey or others to originate is U.S. Attorney Durham.
Midday today, President Trump tweeted: “Based on the IG Report, the whole Witch Hunt against me and my administration was a giant and illegal SCAM. The House of Representatives should now get back to work on drug prices, healthcare, infrastructure and all else. The Mueller Report showed No Collusion, No Obstruction!”
STRATEGIC WAR DANGER
Sept. 3 (EIRNS)—Months of negotiations between American diplomat Zalmay Khalilzad and Taliban representatives in Doha, Qatar have now resulted in a draft agreement in which the U.S. would withdraw 5,000 troops from Afghanistan. Khalilzad briefed Afghan President Ashraf Ghani in Kabul on the draft deal on Sept. 1. Ghani’s spokesman Sediq Sediqqi then said Ghani will “study and assess” the details. “But for us, a meaningful peace or a path to a meaningful peace is the end of violence and direct negotiation with the Taliban,” he said.
“In principle, we have got there,” Khalilzad told TOLONews television in an interview, reported Reuters. “The document is closed.” In return for the U.S. withdrawal, the Taliban would commit to not allowing ISIS, Al Qaeda or other terrorist groups to plan terrorist attacks on the U.S. from Afghan territory. Khalilzad told TOLONews that the aim of the deal was to end the war, and while he said it would lead to a reduction in violence, there is no formal ceasefire agreement between the Taliban and the Afghan government. It would be up to negotiations among Afghans themselves to agree a settlement, he said. The agreement also still has to be approved by President Donald Trump.
The Afghan government has not been in the U.S.-Taliban talks, something which it has complained about repeatedly.
U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo was at NATO headquarters in Brussels today, where he was to have briefed Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg on the Afghan draft agreement. A NATO official told AFP that Stoltenberg and Pompeo would discuss “current security issues and preparations for upcoming meetings,” including the alliance’s summit in London in December. “We expect they will also discuss the peace process and the NATO-led mission in Afghanistan,” the official said.
The draft agreement announced by Khalilzad came against the background of relentless violence with attacks nearly every day, including two large attacks in the north of the country over the Aug. 31-Sept. 1 weekend, and a suicide bombing today, targeting the so-called Green Village, a compound in Kabul housing foreign organizations. At latest report, 16 people were killed, and 119 injured.
Sept. 3 (EIRNS)—Iranian President Hassan Rouhani explicitly rejected negotiations with the U.S. under present conditions, while at the same time Iranian negotiators in Paris are intensely working out the details of an arrangement which is intended to allow Iran to sell oil. In an address to the Iranian parliament, this morning, Rouhani said that Iran has opted for national resistance to the U.S. “maximum pressure” policy and active diplomacy and has not decided to negotiate with the U.S. despite some suggestions from many states, reported IRNA.
Rouhani said any dialogue with the U.S. would have to fall within the framework of the group of major powers that agreed to the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, the 2015 nuclear deal by which Iran accepted restrictions on its nuclear program in return for economic relief from UN-mandated sanctions. Rouhani also said Iran was ready to further reduce its commitments to the accord “in the coming days” if current negotiations with European nations yield no results by Sept. 5.
Rouhani also voiced regret over the failure of European nations to fulfill pledges they made during negotiations. “Unfortunately after the U.S. betrayal … the Europeans haven’t acted on their commitments or couldn’t … in some cases they could have acted but did not,” he said. “What we are asking of the other countries is that they continue to buy our oil. We can continue negotiations even after the third step.”
Nonetheless, discussions on facilitating Iranian oil sales appear to have generated some optimism that Europe and Iran can reach an agreement which would keep Iran in the JCPOA. A delegation led by Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi, and including the governor of the Central Bank of Iran and Iran’s Oil Minister, met with their French counterparts for ten hours on Sept. 2. They were focused on possible scenarios for furthering the initiative put forward by the French President on the nuclear deal, reported Tasnim. “Fortunately, the views have become closer together on many issues,” Iranian government spokesman Ali Rabiei told reporters in Tehran yesterday, adding, “Technical discussions on European commitments are now underway.”
Sept. 3 (EIRNS)—Speaking Monday, Sept. 2, at a press conference in Warsaw, Poland with Polish President Andrzej Duda, U.S. Vice-President Mike Pence told the media, “with its efforts to meddle in elections across Europe and around the world, now is the time for us to remain vigilant about the intentions and the actions being taken by Russia.” Pence also charged that “Russian forces still illegally occupy large parts of Georgia and Ukraine.”
Pence’s comments contradict President Donald Trump’s statement at the G7 summit in France on Aug. 26, where Trump told the press conference with French President Emmanuel Macron, that Russia should be invited back into the “G7,” and return the G7 to being the “G8.” Trump explained, “I think it would be better to have Russia inside the tent than outside the tent,” according to the White House transcript.
President Trump was scheduled to go to Europe and meet with Polish President Duda, but with Hurricane Dorian threatening the East Coast, Trump remained in the U.S.
Pence and Duda, at the press conference, both spoke glowingly about the plans for increased U.S. forces in Poland. Duda said, “We also discussed the expansion of American presence in Poland. I hope that, this year, we will be able to sign the final agreements concerning the extending of U.S. presence. I hope that final decisions will be taken concerning the locations.” At present there are some 4,500 U.S. troops on a rotating basis in Poland, with another 1,000 to be added. Pence said of discussions on timelines, that the process is “part of the United States’ ongoing commitment to this alliance and our relationship with Poland. Rotating troops through this country, we think, is reflective of the strong commitment to our mutual security.”
THE NEW GLOBAL ECONOMIC ORDER
Sept. 3 (EIRNS)—Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi made the following statement on his official website before leaving today to attend the Eastern Economic Forum in Vladivostok.
“I will be visiting Vladivostok, Russia on 4-5 September, 2019.
“My visit to Far East Region of Russia, the first by an Indian Prime Minister, underlines the desire on the both sides to diversify and further strengthen the bonds of our robust bilateral relations.
“The objective of my visit is twofold—to participate as the Chief Guest at the 5th Eastern Economic Forum at the invitation of President of the Russian Federation Mr. Vladimir Putin and to hold the 20th India-Russia Annual Summit with him. The Forum focuses on development of business and investment opportunities in the Russian Far East Region, and presents enormous potential for developing close and mutually beneficial cooperation between India and Russia in this region.
“Our two Countries enjoy excellent relations, based on the strong foundation of our special and Privileged Strategic Partnership. Both countries cooperate extensively in the strategic fields of defense, civil nuclear energy and peaceful uses of space. We have robust and growing trade and investment relations.
“Our strong partnership is complemented by a desire to promote a multipolar world and the two countries closely cooperate towards this end in regional and multilateral fora.
“I look forward to discussing with my friend President Putin the entire gamut of our bilateral partnership as well as regional and international issues of mutual interest. I also look forward to meeting other global leaders attending the Eastern Economic Forum, and interacting with Indian Industry and business representatives participating in it.”
In an appended tweet, Modi stated: “In Russia, there would also be a visit to the Zvezda ship-building complex. It would present a great opportunity to learn about Russia’s exemplary capabilities in the ship-building sector as well as explore possibilities of cooperation in this area.”
SCIENCE AND INFRASTRUCTURE
Sept. 3 (EIRNS)—China today issued a new White Paper entitled “Nuclear Safety in China” which elaborates on China’s basic principles and policies in the field of nuclear security, sharing its concepts and practices of regulation, and clarifying its determination to promote global nuclear safety governance and explaining the actions it has taken to achieve this. The document also underlined that China’s expansive use of nuclear energy is part of their program to move to “clean and efficient energy” and to reduce its dependence on coal. China now has 47 nuclear reactors in operation and is planning for 11 more.
The White Paper was also a resounding call for the peaceful use of nuclear energy for the rest of the world as well. China has become a major exporter of its own nuclear technology and has made nuclear energy a major part of its Belt and Road Initiative, with two Chinese-made Hualong reactors now slated to be built in Bangladesh.
The publication of the White Paper also occurs as the Chinese nuclear industry, like Huawei, has been placed in the crosshairs by the U.S. neocons, with China General Nuclear Power Corp., China’s largest state-owned nuclear company, being placed on the U.S. Entity List in August, barring U.S. companies from selling products to it. The obvious connection of the two issues was evident from the fact that China Daily published the text of the White Paper in the same issue as an article on the ban.
Moreover, given the fact that the U.S. no longer builds nuclear power plants, this “Entity List” proscription has not been done as a matter of U.S. competition with China, but can only be seen as an attempt to sabotage development in the underdeveloped countries. The White Paper seems to indicate that this is also clearly understood by China, by highlighting the importance of nuclear energy for mankind in building what it calls “a Community of Shared Future for Nuclear Safety.”
President Xi Jinping, in his comments to members of the Communist Party of China Party School in the last week, emphasized the seriousness of the attacks on China, telling the younger and middle-aged cadre that they have to be willing to fight hard to realize China’s rejuvenation, as there is now serious push-back.
Sept. 3 (EIRNS)—Helga Zepp-LaRouche said the following today regarding her “International Call to Youth,” printed below: “We will have International Days of Action starting on Sept. 10 and 12, for which I have just written this leaflet that should be used simultaneously everywhere—in Latin America, in Europe, in Africa, in Asia, and in the United States. We should rally the youth of the world to see that the climate-change madness is completely contrary to the true identity of man as a spacefaring species, which can, with space technology, attack any problem, including that of climate change.”
There is really good news: Man is capable of reason and therefore limitless intellectual and moral perfectibility! We can do something that neither the donkeys nor the monkeys can do: we can discover new scientific principles of the universe in which we live, without limits! And these qualitative discoveries mean that, unlike donkeys and monkeys, we can constantly redefine what resources are, therefore making them unlimited, and that we can continue to improve the livelihoods of humanity!
We are experiencing unprecedented, fascinating scientific revolutions: the Chinese are exploring the dark side of the Moon with their Chang’e Moon missions, planning to mine helium-3 as fuel for the coming fusion economy on Earth, and next year a Mars mission will investigate the conditions for terraforming the red planet. With their Chandrayaan-2 mission to the south pole of the Moon, the Indians will explore the ice in the craters there, which are always in the shade, and thus one of the essential prerequisites for life on the Moon. The European Space Agency is working on concrete plans for international cooperation on a permanent Moon village! The U.S. is building upon the Kennedy Apollo program with its Artemis program, and Russia, the U.S., and China all see nuclear-powered spaceships as the right choice for future flights to Mars and deep into space!
The great thing about space travel is that it proves that we are not living in a closed system where raw materials are limited and the murderous views of Thomas Malthus, Julian Huxley, Bertrand Russell, and Prince Philip would be correct, but on the contrary, we live an anti-entropic universe. Space travel is the irrefutable proof that the universe “obeys” an adequate hypothesis of the human mind, that there is therefore absolute coherence between the immaterial ideas produced by reason, and the physical laws of this universe, and that these ideas are the spearhead of the anti-entropic dynamics of the universe.
There have been groundbreaking proofs recently: around 100 years after Einstein’s theses on the existence of gravitational waves and black holes, the change in space-time has now been proven, and shortly thereafter, with the help of eight radio telescopes distributed all over the world, images were made of the area around a black hole whose mass is 6.5 billion times larger than that of the Sun, 55 million light years away at the center of the M87 galaxy. There is still so much to discover in our universe, where, according to the Hubble telescope, there are at least two trillion galaxies! Space exploration opens up a deeper insight into how the laws of our universe work, and what role we humans play in it!
This is the life-affirming cultural optimism that comes with the idea of humanity as a space-faring species, in complete contrast to the contrived doomsday atmosphere which is spread by the apostles of the coming apocalypse—such as Prince Charles and the hedge-fund cover girl Greta Thunberg. Behind the Greta hype are quite vile interests: the trans-Atlantic financial system is facing a more serious crash than in 2008, and the financial sharks and locusts of the City of London and Wall Street are trying one final big deal, to steer as much investment into “green” technology as possible, before the systemic crisis hits.
A closer look at the sponsors of Greta’s extremely ambitious and well-funded agenda, the Extinction Rebellion (XR) and Fridays For Future (F4F), reveals that this movement is being funded by the richest people on Earth, including Bill Gates, Warren Buffett, George Soros and Ted Turner. The fact is that the beneficiaries of the climate hype and the Green New Deal are the banks and hedge funds.
The target of this unprecedented manipulation is you, the children and teenagers of this world! Shouldn’t it make you stop and think, when your alleged “rebellion” is supported by the whole spectrum of mainstream media and the entire liberal establishment? Yet the vile idea that manipulating the paradigm shift of an entire society must begin with the indoctrination of children is nothing new. As early as 1951, Lord Bertrand Russell wrote in his article “The Impact of Science on Society”:
“I think the subject which will be of most importance politically is mass psychology. … Its importance has been enormously increased by the growth of modern methods of propaganda. … It may be hoped that in time anybody will be able to persuade anybody of anything if he can catch the patient young and is provided by the State with money and equipment. The social psychologists of the future will have a number of classes of school children on whom they will try different methods of producing an unshakable conviction that snow is black. …not much can be done unless indoctrination begins before the age of ten.”
The goal of the apocalyptic scaremongering by people like Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (“We have only 12 years left!”), or the head of the British Commonwealth, Prince Charles (“We only have 18 months left!”), is an induced radical change in way of life of mankind. Everything that we have understood as progress during the last 250 years should be abandoned, and we should return to the technological level that existed before the Industrial Revolution. But this also means that then the number of people who can be sustained at that level will drop to about a billion or less.
It would mean that developing countries would have no prospects for ever escaping poverty, hunger, epidemics and a shortened lifespan; it would be a genocide of an unimaginably large number of people! If “climate scientist” Mojib Latif thinks that the Western lifestyle can not be transmitted to all people in the world, and if Barack Obama is outraged that many young people in Africa want a car, air conditioning and a big house, then behind that lurks the inhuman arrogance of members of the totally privileged upper class. It is precisely this view by the colonial rulers that is responsible for the fact that Africa and much of Latin America are still underdeveloped, and many hundreds of millions of people have died early unnecessarily.
For the developing world, the pseudo-religion of anthropogenic climate change means genocide, but for the soul of the young people of the world, the cultural pessimism it induces is a poison that destroys confidence in human creativity. When everything becomes a problem and is suddenly laden with guilt—eating meat, or eating at all, driving a car, flying, home heating, clothing, and indeed life itself—it destroys any enthusiasm for discovery, any enthusiasm for that which is beautiful, and all hope for the future. And if every human being is just another parasite that destroys the environment, then quite a few come to the misanthropic conclusions of the mass shooters of Christchurch and El Paso, who in their “manifestos” cited environmental reasons for their actions.
Conversely, the scientific and technological advances associated with space travel are the key to overcoming all apparent limitations of our present existence on Earth. “Terraforming”—the creation of human conditions—then becomes possible not only on the Moon and Mars, but also here on Earth, and in the future on many heavenly bodies in our solar system and perhaps beyond.
In his “Anthropology of Astronautics,” the German-American space pioneer Krafft Ehricke writes:
“The concept of space travel carries with it enormous impact, because it challenges man on practically all fronts of his physical and spiritual existence. The idea of traveling to other celestial bodiesreflects to the highest degree the independence and agility of the human mind. It lends ultimate dignity to man’s technical and scientific endeavors. Above all, it touches on the philosophy of his very existence. As a result, the concept of space travel disregards national borders, refuses to recognize differences of historical or ethnological origin, and penetrates the fiber of one sociological or political creed as fast as that of the next.”
Today, we need this culturally optimistic image of mankind, and the passionate love for humanity associated with it as the only creative species known to date! The fact that we can venture into space means that we can overcome the narrow, Earth-bound mindset. “There, in the stars, lies mankind’s entry into the long-awaited Age of Reason, when our species sheds at last the cultural residue of the beast,” as Lyndon LaRouche put it.
It is an incredible privilege to be young now, to reach for the stars and help shape an epoch of humanity that, for the first time in history, can unleash the unlimited potential of our species!
