This Morning’s Rendezvous with Destiny
Jan. 27 (EIRNS)—As you probably know, on Jan. 21, Martin Luther King Day, 60 prominent Americans, including two of Robert Kennedy’s children and a nephew and co-workers of Dr. King, called for a “Truth and Reconciliation Committee” to re-open the investigations into the actually-unsolved assassinations of Malcolm X in 1961, John F. Kennedy in 1963, and Dr. King and Robert Kennedy in 1968.The demand itself is fully justified, even if a few of the signers may be misusing it for other purposes. But none of that is our point here. Here, our question is—why now, after more than 50 years? The authors of the call may not know it—some might heatedly deny it. But it is because the opportunity that beckoned 50 years ago, despite all the differences—the chance for which the oldest of us have fought for over 50 years—is back again today, but bigger and better. IFwe act now—today!Franklin Roosevelt had prepared, for after the war, the law and institutions for a Westphalian world order of perfectly sovereign nation-states, joining voluntarily in an international Hamiltonian credit system, and each free to employ such a system in their own country. But Roosevelt died an untimely death before the war was over. When Vice President Truman heard that the Roosevelt had died, his first response was, “But I can’t be President. I’m such a little man.” Lyndon LaRouche, then in U.S. military service in Asia, said exactly the same thing. Truman accepted British orders to crush Roosevelt’s plans for the postwar period.Later, beneath his placid exterior, Truman’s successor Eisenhower began to fight back. He came out openly to put a halt to British aggression against Egypt in the Suez Crisis of 1956. The Russian Sputnik of October 1957, triggered America’s drive into science, high-technology and space, which began under Eisenhower and quickly accelerated during John Kennedy’s 1,000 days.Franklin Roosevelt’s widow Eleanor had counselled John Kennedy on continuing her husband’s work, and he began to do this across the board as President, before he was shot. Man’s first and so-far only visits to another heavenly body were among the greatest accomplishments of the tragic 20th Century. Those who have studied this period understand that the irreplaceable roles of Dr. King and John and Robert Kennedy were inextricably interlinked, for all their many and long fights and disagreements. Malcolm X was also very important. If the Malcolm X who was coming to light in 1965 had lived, the “black power” tricks and traps which were used to trip up Dr. King, would never have succeeded as they did.The British Empire killed all of these men, and that empire went on a worldwide rampage of war and economic collapse. But we should remember what Lyndon LaRouche has said about this in discussion: The American people should have met the assassinations with their own open determination to continue the work of these leaders—even more strongly than before. Instead they retreated—except for a few like LaRouche.LaRouche was targetted for assassination and then unjustly jailed for five years after he changed history with the Reagan-era Strategic Defense Initiative.  But he went on to propose the Eurasian Land-Bridge, which is now a great world reality. Now we stand at the greatest moment of opportunity. The challenges we face are the not the challenges of the past—they are the new challenges of the future.  Right now, if British-allied Democrats are trying to divide Trump’s base, we must rally the base by recruiting them to our program for the real solutions which are needed now, while splitting the Democratic base in the same process. We must summon forth what history demands from within each of us, with the help of LaRouche’s inspiring ideas and his personal example. As he said once at a conference many years ago: “You may be tired; you may be upset. But when history demands you turn that lever—you turn that lever!”

U.S. POLITICAL & ECONOMIC

Trump Colleague Roger Stone Gets the ‘LaRouche Treatment,’ in Mueller-Staged Arrest
Jan. 27 (EIRNS)—At 6 a.m. on the morning of Jan. 25, FBI agents in full tactical gear with long guns, hit the door of a 66-year-old unarmed political consultant, whose sin is defiance and mockery of their authority. They were accompanied by a CNN camera crew, whispering sports-type commentary for this geek show staged by Special Prosecutor Robert Mueller. Roger Stone, the victim of this thuggery, pointed out in a statement following his initial court appearance, that throughout Mueller’s investigation of him, he has been represented by an attorney, and normal procedure would involve contacting that attorney and allowing for Stone’s voluntary surrender. Instead, Stone was indicted, arrested, and, as Jan. 25, his house in Ft. Lauderdale and his apartment in New York are being searched. He was released after an appearance in the U.S. District Court in Florida and will appear to answer the charges in Washington, D.C. next week. The words which come to mind are those from the famous poem by anti-Nazi German Lutheran Pastor Martin Niemöller about an apathetic and cowardly citizen witnessing the Nazis hauling off one allegedly dissident group after another, and not acting. First They Came… is the title of his famous poem. American poet and Pastor Maurice Odgen’s The Hangman makes the same point. The indictment is about lying to Congress and raging by email against people who sell you out once the full force of the state is applied against them. Stone tore into Randy Credico, a New York radio commentator, comedian, and Democratic Party hack, who allegedly helped Stone contact WikiLeaks, as Credico sold Stone out to House investigators and to Robert Mueller. The Stone emails containing these tirades are now called obstruction of justice and witness tampering. In fact, this is one more Mueller “bombshell,” in which the crime alleged has been created by Mueller himself, based on harassing and bankrupting potential witnesses—a so-called process crime for falling into created perjury traps—a concocted crime that has nothing to do with President Donald Trump himself. Roger Stone has been bankrupted by legal fees stemming from the investigatory and grand jury process, as well as by civil suits launched against him by Democratic partisans. It’s obvious that Mueller will now try and flip Stone, using the hammer created by the threat of years in prison implied in multiple charges, alleging false-statement, obstruction, and witness-tampering. To date, including in his first post-arrest statement, Stone has loudly and publicly refused to cave in, compose, or fabricate in order to falsely implicate the President in any crime.By his indictment of Stone, Mueller is hoping to throw up enough smoke around lies concerning links to Trump that the public will forget the fact that Mueller’s story about the Russians makes absolutely no real sense. And, as EIR and others have repeatedly shown, it is all part of the British campaign to force Trump’s impeachment at all costs and to mobilize U.S. citizens for war with Russia. Stone has been outspoken in pointing to the British as the actual foreign culprits trying to shape the 2016 Presidential campaign to Hillary Clinton’s benefit, and the British have noticed.

Pompeo Proclaims to UN that Venezuela Regime-Change Operation Targets Russia and China

Jan. 26 (EIRNS)—In a speech today at an emergency session of the UN Security Council called by the United States, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo made absolutely clear that he and other U.S. loyalists of the British Empire’s war party are blowing up the Venezuelan crisis and promoting regime-change in that country, in order to target Russia and China, along with wrecking any possibility of Ibero-America’s regional cooperation in the Belt and Road Initiative. In his provocative speech, Pompeo demanded that every Security Council member state must take sides. “Either you stand with the forces of freedom, or you’re in league with Maduro and his mayhem,” he warned. “No more delays, no more games.” He condemned Russia, China, Syria and Iran for backing the government of Nicolas Maduro, charging in particular that Russia and China “are propping up a failed regime.”Although sharply critical of both the Maduro government and its predecessor and sponsor Hugo Chávez, EIR’s Founding Editor and physical economist Lyndon LaRouche over the years repeatedly opposed such regime-change operations in Venezuela or elsewhere. That kind of interference in the internal affairs of sovereign nations, no matter how bad or good their government is, only serves to further the British agenda of ending the Peace of Westphalia system and ushering in a global bankers’ dictatorship.Russia’s UN Ambassador Vassily Nebenzia responded sharply to Pompeo’s antics, arguing first that there was no reason to even discuss the Venezuelan situation at the Security Council, as it posed no threat to peace and security. What does pose a threat, he continued, are “the shameless and aggressive actions of the United States and their allies to oust a legitimately elected President of Venezuela,” and stating that Washington is attempting “to engineer a coup d’état.”According to RT, Nebenzia charged that the UNSC meeting is nothing more than “another element” of U.S. strategy and an “unethical ploy” by Washington to involve the Security Council—whose permanent members include Russia and China—in its campaign for regime change. He also warned that “the U.S. is painting a picture of confrontation between the Maduro regime and the Venezuelan people … which is far from reality.”In a pointed Facebook posting today, reported by TASS, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova charged that, “this is Washington’s attempt to start directly managing the political situation in Venezuela which the U.S. elites consider as their future vassal in the region. They already ‘restored’ democracy in Iraq, as well as in Libya. They failed in Syria, or, it will be more accurate to say, they were not allowed to do it. Now it is Venezuela’s turn.”During the UNSC debate, China’s Ambassador Ma Zhaoxu declared that “China does not interfere in other countries’ internal affairs. We hope the country that accuses others can do likewise itself,” in a clear reference to the U.S.

U.K. Foreign Secretary Hunt Hastens to Washington To Shore Up ‘Special Relationship’ vs Trump

Jan. 25 (EIRNS)—U.K. Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt returned home today, after a quick visit to Washington, D.C., where he met with six top officials of the Trump Administration. The Foreign and Commonwealth Office said Hunt’s discussions “focused on the U.K. and U.S.’s shared efforts to tackle the increasing challenges to democracy throughout the world.” Specific “challenges” publicly cited included Venezuela, Nigeria, Syria, Yemen, and Brexit, but the actual subject was to boost the so-called Anglo-American “special relationship,” which President Donald Trump has threatened. Her Majesty’s envoy waxed so rhetorical about the “enduring relationship between the U.K. and U.S.,” that he pretended the American Revolution never occurred, asserting nonchalantly that the United States and the British Empire’s shared commitment to democracy “has bound our countries together throughout history”!Hunt met Vice President Mike Pence, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, National Security Advisor John Bolton, National Security Agency Director Gen. Paul Nakasone, acting Presidential Chief of Staff Mick Mulvaney and Senior Advisor to the President Jared Kushner. While in Washington, he publicly endorsed the regime-change operation against Venezuela. He announced that the U.K. recognized National Assembly President Juan Guaidó as the legitimate leader of Venezuela, “the right person to take Venezuela forward,” and “supported” the efforts of the U.S., Canada, Brazil and Argentina to “make that happen,” as he put it.Hunt and Pompeo announced an agreement to host a meeting with Saudi Arabia and the U.A.E. on the sidelines of the February “Middle East” meeting in Poland to discuss Yemen, while Hunt reported they also agreed to target Nigeria, preparatory to its upcoming elections, by “jointly” imposing travel restrictions and other sanctions on any individual “found to be illegally interfering in the upcoming Nigerian elections.”

Afghan Peace Talks Promise Resolution, But a Long Road Lies Ahead

Jan. 27 (EIRNS)—The six-day talks between the U.S. Special Envoy Zalmay Khalilzad and at least two factions of the Taliban have come to an end in Doha, Qatar. Following the talks, Khalilzad headed to Kabul, Afghanistan. In his tweet he described that “Meetings here (in Qatar) were more productive than they have been in the past. We have made significant progress on vital issues. Nothing is agreed until everything is agreed, and everything must include an intra-Afghan dialogue and comprehensive ceasefire.” Today, U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo posted on Twitter: “The U.S. is serious about pursuing peace, preventing Afghanistan from continuing to be a space for international terrorism & bringing forces home. Working with the Afghan govt & all interested parties, the U.S. seeks to strengthen Afghan sovereignty, independence & prosperity.” More talks on the draft are expected in February, again in the Qatar capital. It is important to note is that the Taliban upgraded the talks by sending cofounder Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar to Doha to join them, and they subsequently appointed him the Taliban chief negotiator. Mullah Baradar had been imprisoned in Pakistan for years before his release in October.According to Reuters’ Taliban sources, both sides agreed to a draft peace deal stipulating the withdrawal of foreign forces from Afghanistan within 18 months of signing an agreement. However, no joint statement was issued. Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid issued a statement saying, “The policy of the Islamic Emirate during talks was very clear—until the issue of withdrawal of foreign forces from Afghanistan is agreed upon, progress in other issues is impossible,” TOLONews reported today. (The Taliban refer to the country as the “Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan.”) The “other issues” Mujahid referred to involve the Taliban discussing with the Kabul government the future set-up of Afghanistan, and what Taliban’s role will be. So far, the Taliban have rejected talks with Kabul. But that will probably change now.Taliban sources also confirmed to TOLONews that there are provisions in the draft that have broader implications for Afghanistan’s ties with its neighbors, particularly Pakistan, India, and China.TOLONews cited Taliban sources saying that other clauses in the draft include an agreement over the exchange and release of prisoners, the removal of an international travel ban on several Taliban leaders by Washington, and the prospect of an interim Afghan government after the ceasefire is struck. Afghan President Ashraf Ghani has repeatedly rejected the offer to agree to the formation of an interim government.

NEW GLOBAL ECONOMIC ORDER

Italian Minister Geraci Encourages China To Build Infrastructure in the United States
Jan. 25 (EIRNS)—In an interview with Class-NCBC TV on Jan. 23, Italian Undersecretary of State for Economic Development Michele Geraci promoted the same proposal as that made by the Schiller Institute, that a solution for U.S.-China trade imbalances could be Chinese investments in U.S. infrastructure. Geraci also explained, in an excellent way, why Italy seeks cooperation with China to develop Africa.Asked about the positive turn in the U.S.-Chinese trade dispute, Geraci said: “Tariffs have always been used as a tactical tool in order to put some negotiating chips on the table, but I never believed that either the U.S.A., China, or even Europe could use tariffs in a permanent way, to go back to autarky, as in the past. Therefore, the latest news is welcome and, let’s remember, this comes after the ‘moratorium’ on tariffs [announced] at the beginning of the year. Thus, slowly, rationality prevails and confirms that it is more a question of temporary tactics, in order to achieve some concessions from one’s trade partner.”Geraci then expressed his wish that other countries follow the same path of “reducing abnormal trade surpluses,” clearly referring to Germany. What is key, he said, is the will to rebalance the bilateral balance of trade. It can be done in different ways: “There could be agreements—I am thinking of the production of U.S. aircraft which China needs for its increased commercial air traffic. This could be a first step that certainly won’t reduce the deficit by $300 billion, but look: There is another side to the trade balance, which is not the current account balance but the capital account. This means that there could be Chinese investments in the United States, for instance, in infrastructure. The Chinese showed that they are very good at this and the U.S. needs it. That is a capital flow too, which could go from the East to the West, and if you put together trade account and capital account, this can move towards parity as a target. However, a reduction of the trade deficit would be an excellent signal for everyone, for the U.S. and for China as well, because ultimately, China needs things that the U.S. produces.”On Africa, Geraci stressed that “the real way to solve the migration problem is to create conditions for Africa to have a sustainable economic and social development.” The real problem is not “the few thousands” of migrants now, but “the 20 million youth” of tomorrow who can’t find jobs in Africa. “Therefore, what is important is an effort to develop a solid economy in Africa.” He optimistically stated that, “I have said this in the past: Italy can and must play a major role so that our position in the Mediterranean, which has created some problems [with migration flows], is used as a bridge for the whole of Europe and for countries such as China, as a hub to go and invest in Africa.”

World Food Program Head Praises China, as Greatest ‘Success Story’ in Ending Hunger
Jan. 26 (EIRNS)—David Beasley, the Executive Director of the World Food Program (WFP)— the food-assistance branch of the United Nations and the world’s largest humanitarian organization addressing hunger and promoting food security—was interviewed on Jan. 24 by CCTV on the sidelines of the Davos Forum. He said:“When you look where the world has gone in the last few decades, [there are] a lot of success stories around the world, but there’s no greater success story than China. China has reduced the number of people that are hungry by 800 million people in the last 40 years. And it needs to be replicated, modeled and using that experience in other parts of the world. We would like to have your expertise and involvement, and engagement in addressing hunger in countries around the world. So China has gone from being a beneficiary country to now a donor,” said the WFP executive director. He further stated: “China is a global superpower. China has a role to play in helping the world move in a more peaceful, stable direction. And I think the quicker that the West and China can find that path to work together, I think the world will benefit from that.”

COLLAPSING WESTERN FINANCIAL SYSTEM

Soros, at Davos, Demands ‘Open Society’ Overthrow of Xi Jinping and Donald Trump
Jan. 25 (EIRNS)—George Soros, the world’s leading drug pusher, euthanasia merchant, vulture fund operative, and coup plotter—i.e., “the British Empire incarnate,” as Schiller Institute President Helga Zepp-LaRouche called him—was invited to speak at the billionaires’ bash known as the World Economic Forum at Davos, Switzerland. Soros presented a typically lying diatribe, this time against China and Xi Jinping, Vladimir Putin, and Donald Trump, as existential threats to his “open society,” and demanded that all three heads of state be removed from office—regime-change.Soros’s ravings included a warning against the “mortal danger facing open societies from the instruments of control that machine learning and artificial intelligence can put in the hands of repressive regimes. I’ll focus on China, where Xi Jinping wants a one-party state to reign supreme….“China isn’t the only authoritarian regime in the world,” he argued, “but it’s undoubtedly the wealthiest, strongest and most developed in machine learning and artificial intelligence. This makes Xi Jinping the most dangerous opponent of those who believe in the concept of open society.” While Soros said he’d been focussing on China, he went on that “open societies have many more enemies, Putin’s Russia foremost among them. And the most dangerous scenario is when these enemies conspire with, and learn from, each other on how to better oppress their people.”To stop these alleged threats, Soros said, “The first step is to recognize the danger…. Those of us who want to preserve the open society must work together and form an effective alliance. We have a task that can’t be left to governments.”Revealing the depth of his ignorance, Soros elaborated his ridiculous fantasy that Confucianism will rise up and strike down Xi Jinping! “There are, in fact, grounds for hope,” he claimed. “As some China experts have explained to me, there is a Confucian tradition, according to which advisors of the emperor are expected to speak out when they strongly disagree with one of his actions or decrees, even if it may result in exile or execution…. A new political elite has emerged that is willing to uphold the Confucian tradition. This means that Xi will continue to have a political opposition at home.”Soros directly attacked the Belt and Road Initiative, lying that it was designed only to promote China’s interests, not those of recipient countries. “Its ambitious infrastructure projects were mainly financed by loans, not by grants, and foreign officials were often bribed to accept them. Many of these projects proved to be uneconomic.” He repeated the lie that the Chinese economy is now declining, which, he enthusiastically predicted “could also sound the death knell of the Belt and Road Initiative, because Xi may run out of resources to continue financing so many lossmaking investments.”This toady of the British Crown—the unelected head of state for life of 16 countries—raved that, “Since Xi is the most dangerous enemy of the open society, we must pin our hopes on the Chinese people, and especially on the business community and a political elite willing to uphold the Confucian tradition…. The reality is that we are in a Cold War that threatens to turn into a hot one. On the other hand, if Xi and Trump were no longer in power, an opportunity would present itself to develop greater cooperation between the two cyber-superpowers.”

STRATEGIC WAR DANGER

Russia Refuses To Submit to U.S. Ultimatum on Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty
Jan. 26 (EIRNS)—The NATO-Russia Council meeting ended Jan. 25. In addition to the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces (INF) Treaty, Ukraine was also on the agenda. “On both of these issues, Allies and Russia fundamentally disagree,” NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg told reporters afterwards during a press conference that mostly focussed on the INF Treaty. He said that all members of the council agree that the treaty “has been crucial to Euro-Atlantic security,” but that “the treaty is now in jeopardy. And unfortunately, we have not seen any signs of a breakthrough.” Stoltenberg claimed that the only reason there was no progress on the INF Treaty was because Russia refused to back down on the issue of its 9M729 missile, which the U.S. claims has been tested beyond the range allowed for by the treaty. Therefore, Russia must destroy it.Stoltenberg insisted that even after the U.S. begins the INF withdrawal process after Feb. 2, there’s still a chance for Russia to come back into compliance because the process will take six months. But the fact is, he went on, the treaty is in jeopardy. “That’s the reason why we have asked our military commanders, our military authorities, to look into the consequences of a world without the INF Treaty and where Russia continues to deploy these missiles,” he said, refusing to elaborate further on what NATO will be doing. The Russian response has been to call on NATO to help keep the treaty in place. Russia’s mission to NATO issued a statement warning that, “The risks of the treaty’s collapse were highlighted as for the whole European security architecture and especially for prompting a new arms race. There is a need to undertake all necessary efforts to save the INF Treaty. In this regard, readiness was stressed to continue a professional and meaningful dialogue with the U.S. side on a depoliticized and constructive basis to dispel mutual concerns.” Additionally, according to TASS, the Russian side “provided every evidence to prove that accusations against Russia are groundless and are only meant to shift the responsibility for the breakdown of this major instrument that is vitally important for the entire European security architecture onto Russia.”

SCIENCE & INFRASTRUCTURE

Studying the Moon Reveals Earth’s Past

Jan. 26 (EIRNS)—Two recent discoveries about the Earth have been made from studying the Moon. One discovery is based on the analysis of a rock brought back by Apollo 14 astronauts in February 1971. The scientific team has determined that the rock harbors a tiny piece of the ancient Earth. Scientists presume it was blasted off the Earth when our planet was hit by a powerful impact about 4 billion years ago.The scientists conducted chemical analyses of the rock fragment and found that it contained minerals that are rare on the Moon, such as quartz and feldspar, but common on the early Earth. The scientists said that the ancient Earth origin for the fragment will be controversial, but it is the simplest explanation for their findings.“It is an extraordinary find that helps paint a picture of early Earth and the bombardment that modified our planet during the dawn of life,” said David King, scientist at the Lunar and Planetary Institute in Houston, and co-author of the paper on the research.Another team of scientists, at the Southwest Research Institute, studying images and thermal data collected by NASA’s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) over the past 10 years, are determining the age of lunar craters and comparing that with craters on the Earth. Crater counts have typically been used to estimate the age of regions of the Moon, since scientists have determined general periods of heavy or light bombardments by asteroids and other small bodies. This team determined that the Earth has fewer older craters than expected, but not because the craters have eroded over time, which has been the accepted theory until now, but because the impact rate was lower than had been assumed by scientists, prior to 290 million years ago.“The Moon is like a time capsule, helping us understand the Earth,” said William Bottke, an asteroid expert who co-authored the paper inScience on the research. “We found that the Moon shared a similar bombardment history, which meant the answer to Earth’s impact rate was staring everyone right in the face,” he said. The analysis technique they developed in this project will help study the surface of other planets.

Octogenarian Fujimori Returns to Prison, Affirms His Battle for Peru ‘Was Worth the Effort’

Jan. 26 (EIRNS)—Former Peruvian President Alberto Fujimori, age 80, was sent back to prison on Jan. 23, to serve the last 13 years of an unjust 25-year sentence for his “crime” of having successfully led the fight to rescue Peru from the grip of the Shining Path narco-terrorists. A facsimile of the moving letter he wrote to his children is circulating on the internet, in which he tells them:“I have been a prisoner for almost 12 years, and they are taking me back to jail. Is that not sufficient? To my children and my grandchildren, I say to them that the judgment of history will be more just with me than the judgment of my political enemies. And when all these injustices have ended, look at the Peru of today, and remember me with the firm belief that all the wrongs that I have had to live through at the end of my life, were worth the effort.”
