Crossing the Last Red Line? U.S. Officials Leak U.S. Troops Fighting in Ukraine

Oct. 9, 2022 (EIRNS)—Through leaks and apparently informal statements or even so-called “gaffes” by President Biden, U.S. officials appear to be seeking a constant escalation of the Ukraine conflict toward a potential world war—Is it to frighten European officials to stay in line? Following statements about “nuclear Armageddon” which U.S. officials told the Washington Post simply reflected “Biden’s own assessment of what [Putin] could be capable of,” not any intelligence at all; following apparently U.S.-ordered sabotage of the pipelines from Russia to Germany; anonymous U.S. leaks were reported Oct. 6 that active-duty U.S. special operations troops are operating in Ukraine in increasing numbers under a Presidential finding communicated to Congress.

Antiwar.com reported that The Intercept received leaks from “unnamed U.S. intelligence and military officials,” which James Risen and Ken Klippenstein reported in The Intercept on Oct. 5, that American special operators have flowed into, not out of Ukraine during Russia’s military operation there. “There is a much larger presence of both CIA and U.S. special operations personnel and resources in Ukraine than there were at the time of the Russian invasion in February,” they wrote in The Intercept. It is certainly likely that other media received these leaks also, but did not publish anything.

Risen and Klippenstein continue:

“Secret U.S. operations inside Ukraine are being conducted under a presidential covert action finding, current and former officials said. The finding indicates that the president has quietly notified certain congressional leaders about the administration’s decision to conduct a broad program of clandestine operations inside the country. One former special forces officer said that Biden amended a preexisting finding, originally approved during the Obama administration, that was designed to counter malign foreign influence activities.”

TASS quoted Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov on Oct. 8, telling an interview with Argumenty i Fakty daily that: “The West distorts everything in an attempt to show that it is Russia allegedly voicing nuclear threats and may allegedly resort to the use of nuclear weapons in Ukraine. … In the context of the crisis in Ukraine it is the United States and its allies, who are actively trying to put the nuclear rhetoric on the global agenda.”

As Russian officials have many times before, Lavrov said that Russia’s nuclear deterrence policy is solely defensive. “I would like to emphasize that Russia remains committed to the statement that the leaders of the five nuclear powers made on January 3, confirming that nuclear war is unacceptable.”

The complete interview is posted to the Russian page of the Foreign Ministry, as of this writing.
